Yi Xu presents her doctoral thesis

After a successful public disputation, Yi Xu from the Research Group Media Studies completed her doctoral thesis with the distinction magna cum laude.

In her thesis with the title “Multimodal news frames: Comparison of Germany’s and China’s national images in news posts on social media between 2007 and 2019”, Yi Xu developed a theoretically-grounded framework for multimodal framing, provided a systematic review of visual framing publications from 1970 to 2021, and suggested a five-step analytical strategy for multimodal framing analysis. The research sheds light on the visual shift in social media and how the multimodality of digital technologies can transform how news media constructed the perceived social reality.
