Campus Garden
A campus garden is more than just a green space - it is a lively learning and meeting center that promotes sustainable development and actively involves students. On "Earth Day" on April 22, 2025, the Sustainability Working Group invites you to discuss the idea of a campus garden for the TU Ilmenau from 10:00 a.m. in the K2039. Members of the campus garden community at Erfurt University of Applied Sciences, which has been running a campus garden project for several years, will report on their experiences. Anyone interested can contact romana.rauch@tu-ilmenau.de for further information.

Lecture: Ecological consequences of our diet
Speaker: Chris Rombeck, Environmental Education Center
https://www.umweltbildungswerk.de/
Join us for an eye-opening lecture on the ecological consequences of global industrial animal husbandry. Our speaker, Chriss Rombeck from the Umweltbildungswerk, will examine the role of industry in climate change, biodiversity loss and deforestation, and the link between the consumption of animal products and land degradation. Among other things, he will explore the question of what industrial breeding facilities look like, what impact the consumption of animal products has on the environment and what we can do to solve these current problems.

ESD in higher education: Important - but how?
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) plays a central role in higher education by enabling students to critically reflect on the complex challenges of our time and actively shape sustainable solutions. Interdisciplinary approaches, practical teaching methods such as service learning and transformative learning are used to impart skills that are essential for a sustainable society.
The program will open with a keynote speech by Dr. Bettina Hollstein from the Max Weber College at the University of Erfurt. She will present the concept of experimental teaching-learning arrangements (LLA), in which students can test themselves as developers of real solutions for sustainable development. Prof. Stefan Husung from TU Ilmenau will then present an example of the application of LLA in an interdisciplinary teaching project. The session will conclude with a discussion on the application of ESD in the university context.

Film screening "The true cost"
Every year, the international Fashion Revolution campaign commemorates the collapse of the Rana Plaza textile factory on April 24, 2013 and the abuses in the global textile industry. "The True Cost" is a documentary film by director Andrew Morgan from 2015 that deals with fast fashion. It discusses various aspects of the textile industry, from production - especially the lives of low-wage workers in developing countries - to its after-effects such as river and soil pollution, pesticide contamination, disease and death.

Lecture and excursion on bird strike risks and nesting aids on campus
In this block, we want to deal with the topic of species protection on buildings. A major point will be the danger to birds from collisions with glass surfaces, which causes the deaths of around 100 million birds every year in Germany alone. A presentation will provide information about the problem and possible countermeasures. We will then go on an excursion around the campus to discuss problem areas and possible species protection measures on the buildings on site. The speaker will be Christopher Arnold from the NABU Ilm-Kreis working group on species protection on buildings.
Christoph Arnold studied biology (diploma) at the FSU Jena. However, he only discovered his fascination for birds after his studies and has been active in nature conservation both professionally and as a volunteer ever since. He is a member of the NABU Ilm-Kreis working group on species protection on buildings and currently works for the Thuringian Forest Landscape Conservation Association on a project to preserve the protected mountain meadows in the Thuringian Forest Nature Park.

Old jeans, new life - recycling workshop in the Makerspace
The fashion industry produces millions of tons of textile waste every year, often after only a short period of use. Denim in particular, one of the most resource-intensive materials, has a high ecological footprint. But there is a sustainable alternative: recycling!
In our recycling workshop in the Makerspace@UB, we give old jeans a second chance. In the spirit of sustainability, the aim is to breathe new life into old, worn jeans. Each workshop offers three sewing projects suitable for beginners:
Anyone who wants to can bring an old (washed!) pair of jeans - but this is not a must.
Participants learn the basics of sewing and can put their ideas into practice on the sewing machine. For each project, an expert will be on hand to offer advice and support, particularly on how to use the sewing machines.
The workshops are free of charge, but registration is required here: https://turm2.tu-ilmenau.de/course/open?ID=1161
Repariertreff
Repairing instead of throwing away! The Repariertreff Ilmenau sets a conscious example for sustainability and technical independence. Together we find solutions for defective devices - and the knowledge we gain helps people to fix similar problems themselves in the future.
The members of the organization Ingenieure ohne Grenzen e.V. (Engineers without Borders) help anyone who is interested to repair defective electrical appliances and provide support with questions about the use of smartphones and computers. Tools and materials will be provided. We cordially invite all technology enthusiasts to join in and share their knowledge
