It is rare for an invention from Germany to conquer the world. However, in the case of the compression of sound signals, known as mp3, this has been achieved. But it was a very long road. Almost 20 years passed from the initial work to the millions of users.

Karlheinz Brandenburg has walked this path, from basic research at the University of Erlangen to work in standardization committees to the arduous development of the mass market. The lecture will tell of this path, from 1982 to the year 2000.

But the journey continued: no longer in Erlangen, but in Ilmenau, but still with the aim of revolutionizing audio technology. The world's first movie theater with true surround sound, based on wave field synthesis from the company IOSONO, is located in Ilmenau. Unfortunately, this technology was commercially unsuccessful.

Now it's time to move on to the next topic: is it possible to faithfully reproduce natural sound via headphones? The first attempts were made more than 50 years ago, but only Brandenburg Labs GmbH from Ilmenau has succeeded in proving it. Okeanos Home is the name of the product that will hopefully conquer the world of audio technology in the future.
