The streams, moors and mountain meadows in the Thuringian Forest are valuable habitats of particular importance for biodiversity and climate resilience in the region. However, their condition needs to be improved in many places in order to maintain their ecological functions in the future. We are tackling this task together with many partners in the region in our large-scale nature conservation project.

The first step was a comprehensive analysis of the current situation and, based on this, the planning of measures. We have been working on their implementation since this year. The presentation introduces the format of the large-scale nature conservation project, highlights the results of the inventory, makes statements on the condition of the streams, moors and mountain meadows and explains the nature and objectives of the planned measures as well as how to get involved.

Britta Trostorff is a geographer specializing in regional development, rural areas, nature conservation and climate protection. Following her studies in Potsdam and research stations in Erkner and Berlin, she has been researching and teaching at the Bauhaus University Weimar since 2005. This is where her interest in the Thuringian Forest, its history, people and landscape began. Since 2022, she has headed the large-scale nature conservation project Streams, moors and mountain meadows in the Thuringian Forest at the David Nature Foundation.
