At first glance, ageing often appears to us to be a biologically or genetically determined process of decline. However, this view falls short: images and stereotypes of ageing have a decisive influence on our development and experience of old age. In short: ageing is created in our heads. It is therefore worth taking a closer look at our ideas about old age if we want to understand it better. Images of old age are complex and varied, and they influence our development in old age.

A critical reflection of current images of old age is necessary if we want to counter age discrimination in our society and improve the conditions for a meaningful life in old age.

Prof. Dr. Klaus Rothermund holds the Chair of General Psychology II at Friedrich Schiller University Jena.
