The use of electrical energy shapes our entire lives. Even if we can assume that laws, standards and technology ensure a high level of safety, the question of risks and electrical safety arises again and again. The aim is to prevent electrical accidents and fire damage. It is estimated that the fatality rate for electrical accidents is around 50 times higher than for other accidents.
This applies to the world of work, but also in the private sphere. Electrical safety concerns us all and is not just a topic for specialists.
The speaker, Dr. Holger Schau, has dealt extensively with electrical safety in his previous work at the TU Ilmenau, but especially in the VDE Safety and Accident Research Committee. The lecture will address a number of current issues of general interest relating to the dangers of electrical current. The focus is primarily on practical accident sources and scenarios, such as faulty electrical installations (e.g. "eternal" temporary installations), the use of water pumps during floods, PV systems ("balcony" power plants), lithium-ion batteries, etc. Conclusions on how risks can be reduced are included.
