As part of the traditional JENA Carl Zeiss Optics Colloquium, Prof. Stefan Sinzinger, Head of the Technical Optics Group at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at th TU Ilmenau, will give an online lecture on "Holistic Optical System Design for Innovative Solution Concepts" on Tuesday, 30 March, 2021 at 5 pm.

The colloquium is open to all interested parties from research, industry and education and is intended as a forum for new technologies related to photonics.

The topic

Innovative optical system solutions result from a holistic solution approach. This usually requires innovation steps at several points in the process flow from "system design", "design and technological realization of optical components" to "system integration and characterization". The scientific work at the Technical Optics Group at the TU Ilmenau therefore also covers the entire breadth of this implementation chain. The starting point is always the solid basis in classical optical design. In combination with the outstanding technological capabilities at the Center of Micro- and Nanotechnologies of the TU Ilmenau for the fabrication of novel microstructured optical devices, research is conducted on innovative optical system solutions. In the lecture, e.g. zoom optics using tunable optical components as well as novel resonant microstructured optics for metrology and sensor technology will be discussed.

Speaker

Stefan Sinzinger studied physics at the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg. His diploma thesis at the chair of Prof. Adolf Lohmann was his first step into the field of "applied optics". After a research stay of about 9 months at the research institute of the company NEC in Princeton New Jersey he received his PhD in 1993 in the field of micro-optical system integration. In the years 1994-2002 Stefan Sinzinger spent his assistant and postdoctoral period at the department "Optical Communications Engineering" of Prof. Jürgen Jahns at the Open University in Hagen. During this time he had the opportunity to further deepen his expertise in the field of information and microoptics (e.g. as co-author of the textbook "Microoptics", Wiley-VCH Verlag). Since 2002, Stefan Sinzinger has been head of the department of technical optics at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the TU Ilmenau. In addition to his activities as a university lecturer, Stefan Sinzinger is also involved in national and international scientific committees (e.g. as acting chairman of the board of the "German Society for Applied Optics" or as a former DFG review board member) and as co-founder of the optics consulting company "Ilmenau Optics Solutions GmbH".
