After successfully completing your studies, you can apply for a residence permit to search for a job for 18 months - if you are from a non-EU country.

Information about your residence status as an EU national can be found on the website of the Federal Foreign Office.

You will often need an authenticated copy of your graduation certificate, as it serves as an official proof of your qualifications – without having to hand over the original (e.g. for job applications or in case the original is lost or damaged). Authentication can be done by:

• Thecity's Bürgerbüro: €8 per document. Note: Only documents in German can be authenticated.

• Your university: free of charge. Contact the legal office at TU Ilmenau. Note: Only graduation certificates from your own university can be authenticated.

• The church community: usually free of charge, donations are welcome.
