Tongji Zhejiang College and Tongji University

Tongji Zhejiang College (TZC) is a subsidiary institution of Shanghai-based Tongji University. Teaching and research at TZC are primarily carried out by Tongji professors and teaching staff. There are currently around 10,500 students at TZC, which offers 26 degree programs with a focus on engineering, natural sciences and economics. Relations with German universities are coordinated by the Chinese-German Center (CDZ), which is currently responsible for three degree courses - Biomedical Engineering, Industrial Engineering and German Language. The university is based in the city of Jiaxing. Jiaxing is located in the north-east of Zhejiang province and in the heart of the Yangtze Delta, with a population of around 3.6 million. It is about 85 km away from both Shanghai and Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province.

Jiaxing is a modern industrial city, which is primarily characterized by the textile industry, the automotive industry and the electrical industry as well as a small and medium-sized economic structure. The silk industry - Jiaxing is considered the "home of silk" in China - is also of particular importance. In addition, the city is one of the most important tourist cities in the country due to its long history (the MaJianbang culture, which originated here around 6,000 years ago, is one of the original cultures of Chinese civilization) and a distinctive cultural scene.

Tongji University (Tongji U) in Shanghai was founded in 1907 as the “German Medical School” and is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the country. Its collaboration with Germany is reflected in its many partnerships with German universities, the Sino-German College, and the atmosphere on campus itself. Tongji U has two campuses, the Siping Campus and the Jiading Campus. The latter is home to many engineering faculties, some of which also offer courses in German. This is where you will spend your second semester. With a population of almost 25 million, Shanghai is the largest city in China. The Huangpu River flows through it, with its wide promenade and impressive skyline. The city has an international character, as the translation of its name, “city from which one sets sail,” already reveals.

Course of study

As a student of the TU Ilmenau, you will spend the 6th and 7th semester of the double bachelor's program at the TZC and Tongji U in China (including a 16-week internship). You will complete your Bachelor's thesis following your internship in China. You will be supervised by a university lecturer from both the TU and the TZC or Tongji University.

The study program is structured as follows:

Admission requirements

  • At least 5 semesters of study in the Biomedical Engineering degree program
  • Grade point average of at least 2.5 (ECTS or credit points)
  • Proof of adequate language skills in English or Chinese
    • English: TOEFL with a score of 550 or IELTS with a score of 6
    • Chinese: fulfillment of the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) requirement for the intermediate level

Application procedure

Students on the Bachelor's degree course in Biomedical Engineering can apply until the end of the 2nd month of the 5th semester. Care should be taken to ensure that all examinations have been completed when transferring to China so that the focus can be placed on the subjects in China and the final thesis can be started and completed there without the need to return to Germany.

Application procedure:

  1. Application to the examination office of the faculty or to the responsible program coordinator
  2. Informing students about admission
  3. Start of studies (alternatively internship) in the summer semester of the following year
  4. Final thesis in the following winter semester.
