Participants in the Bachelor’s „Berufsfeldorientierung Journalismus“ programme visited two key editorial offices in Thuringia and gained an insight into the practical aspects of their chosen profession.

Having had to forego field trips in previous years due to the pandemic, the students were now able to visit two editorial units that are central to Thuringia. On 20 April, the students visited the MDR Thüringen regional broadcasting centre. With around 250 staff, the broadcasting centre in Erfurt produces regional and national content for the radio programme “MDR Thüringen” and the regional TV magazine “MDR Thüringen Journal”. In addition to an extensive tour of the studios and editorial offices, as well as a visit to the KIKA treehouse, two freelancers – both of whom are also students at Ilmenau University – were on hand to answer questions about internships and career opportunities at MDR.

On 27 April, the local editorial office of “Freies Wort” opened its doors to students on the Bachelor’s „Berufsfeldorientierung Journalismus“ programme. The Ilmenau local editorial team reports on current affairs in and around the Ilm district for the print editions of the daily newspaper and for the online portal “Insuedthueringen.de”. After gaining an insight into the day-to-day work of local print journalism and the editorial trend towards “online first” in the newspaper industry, the students also had the opportunity here to ask questions and obtain information about student internships.
