Rheumatism, a widespread disease—everyone has heard of it and immediately thinks of crooked fingers and aching joints. But rheumatology is much more than that. Over 200 different inflammatory rheumatic diseases are treated by rheumatologists. And it’s not just the joints that are affected; all other organs and tissues can be affected as well—from the skin to the blood vessels, the lungs, the eyes, and even the heart.

In her lecture at the TU Ilmenau Bürgercampus, Dr. Sylke Schneider, a specialist in internal medicine and rheumatology and chief physician at the Klinik an der Weißenburg, the only specialized hospital for rheumatology in Thuringia, will take the audience on a journey into the fascinating field of rheumatology. Some conditions can be diagnosed simply by visual examination, while others require detective work to uncover. In doing so, it is important to piece together the patient’s individual medical puzzle with care and expertise.
