External Funding per Professorship: TU Ilmenau Ranks Among the Top Ten Nationwide

In 2024, a professor at the TU Ilmenau secured an average of 553,000 euros in third-party funding. The Federal Statistical Office has just announced this in its latest statistics. With an increase of over 13 per cent on the previous year, the TU Ilmenau ranks an outstanding 9th out of all 83 universities in Germany included in the analysis. This result is all the more impressive given that TU Ilmenau achieved this significant increase against a nationwide downward trend: on average, German universities secured 2.1 per cent less third-party funding per professor than in the previous year. Medical and health sciences institutions are excluded from these statistics.

Third-party funding refers to the average income that universities secure from public and private bodies in addition to their core funding. This primarily includes funds – usually project-based – provided by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the European Union, companies or foundations.

With an average of 553,000 euros per professorship, the TU Ilmenau ranks 9th out of 83 universities in Germany, having improved by five places compared with the previous year. The universities ranked ahead of TU Ilmenau are, almost without exception, significantly larger and better-funded than TU Ilmenau. RWTH Aachen University tops the external funding statistics per professorship, followed by the Technical University of Munich and the University of Stuttgart.

Professor Stefan Sinzinger, Vice-President for Research and Young Scientists at the TU Ilmenau, is delighted with this success: “This magnificent achievement once again testifies to the outstanding commitment and dedication of the researchers at the TU Ilmenau and the excellent quality of their work. I would particularly like to emphasise here the very real significance that these scientific activities have for the town of Ilmenau, the region and the state. The external funding secured, totalling almost 50 million euros, is used for the most part to support early-career researchers and thus benefits the entire region in many ways. Added to this is a collaboration – in some cases very close – with local and wider regional industry, which further enhances the economic impact of these scientific contributions.”
