First Lego League Challenge at TU Ilmenau

Fully automated Lego robots designed and programmed by pupils

On January 13, the First Lego League Challenge will take place at TU Ilmenau. Pupils from Germany, Austria and Switzerland will compete against each other in the research and robotics competition. In regional competitions, teams of 9 to 16-year-olds design, program and test a fully automated robot like real engineers and conduct research on current topics. The winning teams then compete against each other in February and March in various cities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland before heading to the grand finale in Davos, Switzerland, on April 13 and 14 .

"MASTERPIECE - inspire others with your passion" - the theme of the First Lego League Challenge in the 2023/24 season gives teams creative freedom for research projects of all kinds. At the regional competition on January 13 at TU Ilmenau, 70 boys and girls from Erfurt, Ilmenau, Jena, Kronach, Oberweißbach, Sonneberg and Zella-Mehlis will compete against each other to determine an overall winning team. In three robot game rounds and a jury session, they will demonstrate their young researcher qualities and can qualify for the next round of the First Lego League Challenge.

The regional competition starts at 9 a.m. in the Humboldtbau at TU Ilmenau, the Robotgame competitions begin at 9:45 a.m., the finals take place at 4 p.m. and the awards ceremony is at 5:45 p.m.. Guests are very welcome at the TU Ilmenau to watch, cheer on and support the teams in the competitions. They can also take part in a competition at the Ilmenau Award by trying out their own Lego skills. Catering for the guests will be provided by the graduates of the "Am Lindenberg" grammar school, who will be boosting their graduation fund.

The regional competition takes place in four categories, for each of which there are points to be earned: Toscore as many points as possible in the "Robotgame", the 9 to 16-year-olds first have to build an autonomous robot and program it so that it solves various tasks autonomously, i.e. without external control, as quickly and error-free as possible in two and a half minutes on a playing field measuring almost four square meters. In the "Research" category, the team that impresses with creative scientific solutions and a well-founded presentation of the research results wins. The trophy for the best "Robot Design" goes to the team that constructs an innovative, robust robot and explains the development process most coherently to the judges. And in the "Core Values" category, the winner is the team that shows the greatest enthusiasm, sportsmanship and respect for their own team members and for the opposing teams.

The First Lego League Challenge not only teaches children and young people how to program, but also soft skills such as time management, communication and teamwork. The team that scores the most points will qualify for the next round of the competition on February 24 in Eberswalde, before going to the big Lego League final in Davos on April 13 and 14.
