On Girls' Day on April 25, the Technische Universität Ilmenau and two research institutes will open their doors to schoolgirls interested in technology and science. Girls from the 5th grade onwards can try out four different workshops: Augmented Reality, Medical Technology, Microelectronics and Mechatronics as well as Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. It pays to be quick, because the workshop places at the TU Ilmenau, the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT and at the Institute for Microelectronic and Mechatronic SystemsIMMS are limited.

The aim of the nationwide Girls' Day is to inspire girls to study technology or science beyond gender stereotypes and to promote their talents. On this day, schoolgirls can take the day off from school to gain an in-depth insight into the relevant degree courses and professions and thus lose their reservations about mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology. At TU Ilmenau and in the research institutes, four workshops from two subject areas will be offered on Girls' Day on April 25.

 
Listening in the metaverse and measuring electrical voltage

In the workshop "Get to grips with technology! - sustainable, future-oriented, responsible" workshop run by the Engineering Sciences department at TU Ilmenau, participants will explore listening in the metaverse - a new type of space that connects real, artificial and virtual objects and thus expands our everyday experience. The girls explore various methods of recording, processing and reproducing audio data. New digital possibilities are used to create new real listening environments through artificially created sounds: Audio Augmented Reality environments. In an experimental hall, the participants get to know the practical work areas of an engineer, they can try their hand at soldering and construct an electrical circuit themselves.

In the workshop at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Computer Science, the girls get a taste of laboratory work and learn what the measurement of electrical voltage has to do with muscle strength, brain activity and physical fitness. They learn how X-rays have revolutionized medical diagnostics and how eye diseases can now be detected at an early stage thanks to state-of-the-art technology in the so-called ophthalmology laboratory.

 
Programming robots and making vibrations visible

In the workshop "Robots and girls: let's change the world(s)!"the girls at the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT are taught how to program small robots and miniature computers on their own. Without needing any previous experience, they learn a programming language with which they can control their robots after a short time and have them perform certain tasks. Girls with some programming experience can also train the robots with artificial intelligence and fine sensors so that the intelligent machines can react to their environment.

Schoolgirls who decide to attend the workshop at the Institute of Microelectronics and Mechatronics Systems IMMS can also take part in the experimental and programming part like a researcher or a real engineer. They will find out what the guitar, violin, piano and saxophone have in common, what vibrations can do and how they can be made visible. And they can solve exciting tasks on the "Open Roberta Lab" programming platform.
