Varenja Erbsland about her experiences and adventures during her semester abroad in Bulgaria's capital.
Are you thinking about doing a semester abroad? - Within the Erasmus programme, this is also possible in Sofia! I was allowed to study at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" in Bulgaria during the winter semester 2017/18 within the newly established university partnership. I did not know what to expect, as I hardly knew the country, the culture and the language. However, I was gripped by curiosity, a sense of adventure and an interest in studying at a university abroad for once.
When I arrived, I felt a bit lost, as I was in a new environment, didn't speak the local language and didn't know anyone yet. However, this subsided within the first few days. I was glad I signed up for the buddy program because I received a lot of support from my buddy, especially in the beginning. He picked me up from the airport and was always available to answer my questions. You also get a lot of support from the ESN (Erasmus Student Network). There were often events organized by the ESN, such as a city tour, get-to-know-you games during the introduction week, parties, trips, hikes, and much more. Especially by participating in these events, it was very easy to make international contacts and friendships.
The most beautiful experience of my stay I had through the "student community" in the dormitory. Before leaving, I was skeptical about moving into the dorm because you share a room and bathroom with another Erasmus student. However, I do not regret this decision. Most Erasmus students live in the dormitory and thus form a small community. We were there for each other and got together almost every evening in one of our rooms if there wasn't an event going on. A small visit was joined by more and more friends until eventually it became a social gathering.
When I first entered the main building of the university, I was fascinated by the high ceilings and the many ornaments. From the beginning I felt at home here. I could also always count on the support of my Erasmus coordinator and my faculty coordinator. In addition, our faculty coordinator also offered any other help, such as finding the best dentist or hairdresser in Sofia or finding out tips for travel destinations. I enjoyed my courses a lot. Because the courses offered are mostly different from those at the TU Ilmenau, I was able to learn a lot of new things. The language of instruction is English.
Looking back, I would decide to go to Sofia again within the Erasmus programme. I had a semester-long insight into the oldest university in Bulgaria, developed personally during this time, made close, still existing, international friendships and am more than happy to have chosen this path!
But I can tell you as much as I want, so "believe your eyes and not your ears", as a Bulgarian proverb says. I hope I have awakened your desire to study at Sofia University.
