June 17 Engineering Day: The ProTELC Project Supports Engineering Students in Thuringia

This year’s Engineering Day will take place on June 17 at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., organized by the Thuringian Engineering Alliance (THÜR ING), a consortium of seven Thuringian universities. The focus: the ProTELC project, which supports engineering students throughout their entire academic journey—from academic orientation and a successful start to their studies all the way through to their transition into the workforce. Visitors are welcome from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

On June 17, the Bauhaus University Weimar will host this year’s Engineering Sciences Day. The member universities of the Thuringian Engineering Sciences Alliance THÜR ING will showcase their collective strengths in research, teaching, and knowledge transfer. THÜR ING brings together seven Thuringian universities: the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt, the Gera-Eisenach Cooperative State University, the TU Ilmenau, the Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences Jena, the Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences, the Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences, and the Bauhaus University Weimar. Through close collaboration, THÜR ING strengthens engineering sciences in Thuringia.

The focus of Engineering Sciences Day on June 17 is the ProTELC project (“Pro Thuringian Engineering Life Cycle”), which, funded by the Thuringian Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture, has been providing targeted support to engineering students throughout their entire academic journey since 2021—from academic orientation and a successful start to their studies through to the transition into their careers. The ProTELC project aims to attract engineering students to study in Thuringia, reduce dropout rates, improve academic success, and ease the transition into professional life. This cross-university project benefits students at all seven Alliance universities.

The Science Camps begin even before students start their degree programs: through playful and hands-on activities, high school students interested in STEM subjects—mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, and technology—are introduced to engineering topics and gain exciting insights into studying in Thuringia. At the start of their studies, preparatory courses help students brush up on their high school fundamentals. As their studies progress, bachelor’s and master’s students are offered refresher courses, mentoring programs, and Science Camps. Companies from the region also contribute to the practical design of these programs.

Even as they enter the workforce, graduates of the THÜR-ING universities are closely supported through the ProTELC project: International graduates have access to an app that clearly explains the application process in Germany and offers valuable guidance. Company visits and “Alumni Stories” provide additional insights into successful career paths and create authentic role models for the transition into professional practice.

Visitors to Engineering Day can learn more about ProTELC and the work of the THÜR ING university alliance from project staff on June 17 at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
