A central need of people is to lead an independent life with regular social contacts with others. In an aging but active society, the research project CO-HUMANICS at TU Ilmenau aims to contribute to enabling close personal interaction even in times of pronounced individualization and spatial separation from relatives and friends. To this end, scientists led by Professor Alexander Raake, head of the Group of Audiovisual Technology at TU Ilmenau, are researching telepresence solutions based on augmented reality or assistance robots. The idea is for people to virtually immerse themselves in the real environment of their spatially distant partner almost as if they were there themselves. The main target group of the research project are men and women in retirement age up to very old people and their typical interaction partners.

In his lecture at the TU Ilmenau Bürgercampus, Professor Raake will first discuss classic technologies such as video telephony and describe their shortcomings for lifelike communication before explaining the new communication technologies envisaged in the CO-HUMANICS research project.
