"tasteMINT - Try it before you study!" Assessment procedure for schoolgirls

Schülerin am FlipchartThueko NWT
From 2 to 6 April, schoolgirls will find out how suitable they are for studies in the fields of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology.

"tasteMINT - Try it before you study" - this is the motto of a potential assessment for young women taking place at TU Ilmenau from April 2 to 6. The self-test will give female pupils in grades 10 to 13 realistic impressions of their STEM skills and potential, which means finding out how well suited they are to studying mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology. Interested schoolgirls can register with the Thuringian Coordination Office for Science and Technology, and participation costs 100 euros. Registration and information: www.thueko.de/tastemint

When female pupils decide to study, they usually assess their own abilities in the fields of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology as being significantly worse than they actually are. The self-testing tool tasteMINT of the Thuringian Coordination Office for Science and Technology helps young women to get a realistic impression of their strengths. The focus is less on determining whether they have concrete expertise and more on how they generally approach a task and what strategies they use to solve it.

How do I solve a task if I don't know all the facts? Do I work efficiently? How do I work in a team? In the tasteMINT self-test, students complete individual and group tasks from the fields of mathematics, physics, and technology. Assessors observe the girls during the test and give them feedback on their strengths and weaknesses immediately afterwards. In this way, they help them to assess themselves more realistically and to choose a course of study that is suitable for them. At the end of the Potential Assessment process, each student receives a summary of her personal strengths and abilities and a certificate. In addition, the young women receive information about STEM subjects at TU Ilmenau and the university.
