"tasteMINT - Try it before you study" - this is the motto of a potential assessment process for young women taking place at TU Ilmenau from April 13 to 17. The self-test will give female students in grades 10 to 13 realistic impressions of their STEM skills, i.e. their potential in mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology. Interested schoolgirls can register at the Thuringian Coordination Office for Science and Technology; participation costs 100 euros including accommodation and meals. When schoolgirls have to decide on a course of study, they usually rate their own abilities in the fields of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology much lower than they actually are - and may miss out on the chance of an exciting course of study and a successful professional career.

In order to make fruitful use of the STEM potential that often lies within young women, female students in grades 10 to 13 can test their own abilities in a multi-day potential assessment process at the TU Ilmenau under professional supervision. The innovative tasteMINT self-assessment tool also focuses on the young women's self-doubt.

tasteMINT self-test: Assessing your own potential correctly

In the self-test, the young women work on individual and group tasks from the fields of mathematics, computer science, physics and technology, observed by assessors. The focus is less on determining whether the students have specific specialist knowledge and more on how they generally approach a task and what strategies they use to solve it: How do I solve a task when I don't know all the facts? Do I work efficiently? How do I work in a team? Immediately after the tasteMINT self-test, the participants receive feedback on their strengths and weaknesses, enabling them to assess themselves realistically and choose a suitable course of study. At the end of the potential assessment process, each student receives a summary of her personal strengths and abilities and a certificate from the Thuringian Coordination Office for Science and Technology.

All-round support during the potential assessment process

During their stay in Ilmenau, the young women receive information about the STEM subjects at the technical university and get to know the university first-hand through campus tours and discussions. The participants are accommodated in the Ilmenau youth hostel for the duration of their stay. Accommodation and meals are included in the participation fee of 100 euros.
