Mathematics, the "art of learning", first flourished in Mesopotamia, India, China and ancient Greece. The origins of mathematics go back over 5,000 years. However, although mathematics is old and useful, its abstract structures still sometimes frighten schoolchildren and adults alike. But math doesn't always have to calculate anything: Many problems, entertaining puzzles, games and even magic tricks are based on mathematical principles. In his lecture at the TU Ilmenau Bürgercampus, former TU Ilmenau lecturer Dr. Werner Neundorf uses a variety of fascinating examples to illustrate that mathematics does not have to be dry and exhausting: regular polygons, the five Platonic solids, magic squares, the ecological model "grass, hare, fox, hunter" and the chaotic sets of Julia and Mandelbrot. And in his book "Mathematische Zauberkiste" (Mathematical Magic Box), Neundorf also describes interesting and magical things from scientific disciplines or simply from everyday life for young and old, laypeople and experts alike.
