TU Ilmenau appoints Adjunct Professor for Internal Combustion Engines

TU Ilmenau ernennt Honorarprofessor für VerbrennungskraftmaschinenTU Ilmenau
The outgoing Rector of the University, Prof. Peter Scharff, presents Dr. Gottschalk with the certificate of appointment

The Technische Universität Ilmenau has appointed Dr. Wolfram Gottschalk as Adjunct Professor for Internal Combustion Engines at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. At the meeting of the Senate, the highest decision-making body of the TU Ilmenau, the outgoing Rector of the University, Prof. Peter Scharff, presented him with the certificate of appointment. Wolfram Gottschalk, who holds a degree in Engineering, has been teaching at the Department of Mechanical Engineering since 2015. In addition to his teaching activities, he conducts research in a wide range of areas in the field of automotive engineering.

Dr. Wolfram Gottschalk studied Mechanical Engineering at the Otto-von-Guericke University of Magdeburg, specializing in piston engines. After receiving his diploma in 1995, he received his doctorate in 2001 with a thesis on the "Influence of Small Valve Strokes on Mixture Formation in the Combustion Engine". His first professional position was as a development engineer in the engine development department at the car manufacturer Audi in Ingolstadt. Since 2001, Dr. Gottschalk has been working at IAV (Ingenieurgesellschaft Auto und Verkehr), one of the world's leading engineering service providers to the automotive industry. Today, he is a senior specialist for combustion process development.

Wolfram Gottschalk completed his habilitation at the TU Ilmenau in 2011. Under the supervision of Prof. Klaus Augsburg, Head of Automotive Engineering, he wrote a paper on "Efficiency and Emission Potentials of Future Combustion Processes of Car Engines". In 2015 he received the Venia Legendi from the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University as a private lecturer and in the same year he took over teaching activities at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. In the Bachelor's degree program in Automotive Engineering he taught the course "Internal Combustion Engine Processes" and in the Master's degree program in Automotive Engineering he lectured on "Fuel Injection and Engine Control". His teaching activities are now to be expanded with further courses.

Prof. Augsburg knows that the field of combustion engines is very popular among students and therefore considers it logical to expand the corresponding range of courses: "Dr. Gottschalk is a proven scientist in the field of combustion engines. In his professional career, he has continuously taught courses in Magdeburg and Ilmenau and supervised student theses and doctoral theses. The students appreciate his broad specialist knowledge as well as his varied application experience in the development of very different engine concepts. It is no exaggeration to state that Dr. Gottschalk lives his scientific commitment and successfully passes it on."
