Patent map Thuringia

The fundamental objective of the project "Patent Map of Thuringia“ is the design and implementation of an electronic version (stand-alone Excel 2010 file) of the Patentatlas Deutschland restricted to Thuringian patent applications submitted in the past seven years. (Please note that the data for the current and the previous year are possibly incomplete in respect to priority applications).

The advantages of an electronic solution are in its continuous updating, its independence from the 5- to 10-year cycle of the Patentatlas Deutschland and its adaption to short-term issues. The interactive visualization of patent data allows their consideration and analysis from a variety of perspectives.

The aim of visualization is to reveal the regional performance of Thuringian districts (Landkreis). Growth kernels and new technology fields are tracked down by patent trends. Growth technologies are mapped in terms of their activities and regional distribution.

In its latest Excel edition, the Patent Map of Thuringia covers data from 2009 to 2016. Due to the usually 18-month delay in publication of patent applications, the data are possibly incomplete, especially for the years 2015 and 2016.

Project origin

The original concept of the Patent Map of Thuringia resulted from a project financed by the Thuringian Ministry of Education, Science and Culture (funding code: B514-11044), and was developed and maintained by PATON from 1 November 2011 to the end of 2013.

In Phase I (from 1 November 2011 to 31 January 2012), an Excel-based dashboard was developed for visualizing patent activities in the geographical area of Thuringia with the help of tables, charts and a choropleth map.

In Phase II (from 1 February 2012 to 31 December 2013) the results were updated in 3-month intervals to allow continuous monitoring and analysis of patent activities. The underlying software was continually improved.
