The Bauhaus.Mobility Hub embodies the vision of a digital and green European Union as a candidate for the European Digital Innovation Hub (EDIH) with a special focus on the areas of mobility, logistics and energy. It acts as a regional one-stop store in Central Germany for the digital transformation of private companies and the public sector. With its interdisciplinary expertise in the application of artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, cyber security and digital skills development, the Bauhaus.Mobility Hub addresses the most important challenges for a digital European Union.

CliMAFlux will develop novel concepts (e.g. in terms of excitation and cooling) for more efficient axial flux motors (e.g. reduction of energy losses during driving cycles by more than 35%), which can reduce the need for rare earth materials by 60%, using highly accurate multi-physical models (e.g. electromagnetic, thermal, mechanical and system level) and digital twins. Innovative designs and manufacturing processes will be proposed.

DENSE deals with individual research projects and the training of young scientists (ESRs) in the field of innovative, reliable engineering of smart energy systems (SES) with a focus on robustness and preventive and corrective measures under uncertainty.

The project is funded by the EU as part of the Interreg Central Europe program

The Digi-B-Well project supports companies in their digital transformation and makes employees fit for the digital age. The project partners are training the skills of managers, public authorities and academics to better prevent digital stress and burnout. They are developing and testing new tools for self-assessment of digital maturity and transformation models in companies. In addition, a digitalization strategy and action plans ensure that their innovative solutions are incorporated into general policy and business practice. The project is being implemented by nine partners from seven countries under the leadership of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County (Croatia).

EMBRACE brings together complementary expertise and resources in the fields of biomedical engineering, materials science, signal processing, neuroscience and social psychology from three academic and three industrial partners from three EU countries. The aim of the project is to develop novel devices, e.g. novel body network sensors and a multimodal alignment system for the simultaneous recording of neural, physiological and kinematic signals from two interacting individuals.

GEN1200 focuses on modular and scalable 1700V power electronics solutions for electric vehicles based on SiC for highly integrated 1200V powertrains. These include technologies for ultra-fast charging while ensuring compatibility with existing charging infrastructure, maximizing the opportunities offered by higher voltages.

Aviation must meet the ambitious targets of the European Green Deal. This means that a gradual shift towards hybrid-electric regional aircraft is needed to significantly reduce fuel consumption. This can only be achieved with power distribution grids that can safely handle the high power and high voltages, ultimately up to several megawatts. The HECATE project will address the associated challenges in terms of system weight and power density, high voltage, lightning, arcing and electromagnetic interference as well as optimized thermal management and digitize the design process with digital twins. This will lead to transformative technology modules that are holistically optimized at the system integration architecture level.

HighScape proposes a series of research and innovation activities to develop, test and validate innovative solutions for next-generation battery electric vehicles (BEVs) that can only be achieved through the latest wide bandgap technologies. HighScape focuses on BEV architectures with distributed multi-wheel drives and in particular on wheel-integrated powertrains and will explore the feasibility of a family of highly efficient, integrated, compact, low-cost, scalable and modular power electronics components and systems, including integrated traction inverters, on-board chargers, DC/DC converters and electric drives for auxiliaries and actuators.

HiPE brings together 13 participants covering the entire value chain to develop new highly energy-efficient, cost-effective, modular, compact and integrated wide bandgap (WBG) power electronics solutions for the next generation of battery electric vehicles (BEV) and to enable significant market penetration of WBG in the automotive sector.

Lasers4NetZero will establish an innovative training program that aims to foster a new generation of creative, entrepreneurial and innovative PhD students focused on laser materials processing, artificial intelligence for quality control, advanced process simulation and predictive life cycle and sustainability analysis for electric vehicle manufacturing.

The territorial challenges to be addressed by the MedWaveImage project are related to public health, medicine and life sciences, one of the priorities of smart specialization technology for Central Europe. In particular, the MedWaveImage project will focus on improving healthcare infrastructures in Central Europe where, due to demographic changes, medical underuse in peripheral and rural areas is a major challenge.

In nature, turbulent convection currents show conspicuous patterns in the mesoscale range whose characteristic length in the horizontal direction exceeds the height of the system scale. They are known as turbulent superstructures of convection, which are not present on larger or smaller scales and develop in ways that have not yet been understood. However, they are an essential link for heat and momentum transport on larger scales, an important driving force for intermittent fluid motions on submesoscale scales, and one of the main sources of uncertainty in climate change and space weather predictions. In MesoComp, the formation of superstructures in massively parallel simulations of compressible turbulent convection in horizontally extended regions is investigated to gain a deeper understanding of their dynamical origin and their role in heat and momentum transport.

MOCO is based on an intensive exchange of personnel to promote joint research and training between 14 universities and industrial companies from eight European countries, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico and South Africa. The proposal includes innovative methods of motion control and creates a comprehensive framework for the design, identification and validation of systems for the field of multi-actuated vehicles

Wheel hub motors (IWMs) are a mature technology that is well suited for new user-oriented electric vehicles (EVs). IWMs can be integrated into multifunctional and controllable modules consisting of the electric powertrain, friction brake and suspension/steering actuation. By combining multiple vehicle functions in one compact solution, the modules offer significant opportunities to improve the design and operation of electric vehicles. This is the starting point of the SmartCorners project. Using machine learning and artificial intelligence, an adaptive, multi-layered control strategy will be implemented with historical and current data of the vehicle, its environment and users, including relevant electric vehicle fleets. This approach will pave the way to software-defined vehicles, ena-bling rightsizing, holistic optimization, innovative fault mitigation and actuator allocation strategies as well as more efficient, adaptive, predictive and personalized system operation.

The advent of Industry 4.0 has created challenges and opportunities for the manufacturing sector and manufacturing education. The Smart Manufacturing Engineering Education for Knowledge Economy (SME2KE) project is developing curricula for advanced manufacturing education (with a focus on laser-based manufacturing technologies) and pedagogical approaches to strengthen the skills of future manufacturing engineers.

Deep learning in artificial neural networks has opened up new ways of processing data and led to highly developed systems with impressive functions and benefits. However, conventional computer hardware is reaching its limits in terms of energy efficiency and speed. Novel brain-inspired or neuromorphic computer chips that work with biologically inspired spiking neural networks have gained attention as they promise highly efficient ways to process data. Significant research efforts have been made to develop such neuromorphic systems in electronic or photonic hardware separately, each of which has its drawbacks and limitations. SPIKEPro proposes a scientific and technological breakthrough by combining low-energy electrical and photonic neurons into a common neural spiking network on an integrated circuit.
