Early warning of disasters: TU Ilmenau/IfMK join AlertHub - Warning Communication Knowledge Network

In the fall of this year, risk and crisis communication researcher Dr. Andreas Schwarz was appointed as German representative in the AlertHub - Warning Communication Knowledge Network, funded by the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST). He will be one of two German representatives in the network’s management committee, which currently counts 79 members in 31 countries.

The aim of this COST Action is to establish a European interdisciplinary network to facilitate international cooperation and knowledge transfer among scientists and practitioners working in the field of warning communication and disaster management. Warning people and communities of impending disasters has become more critical in the face of increasing extreme weather events, with climate change as a key driver. The flooding disaster in Valencia (Spain) was a tragic example exemplifying the importance of early warning communication.

The AlertHub leverages the expertise of scholars in the field of risk and crisis communication to advance knowledge, foster collaboration, and contribute to reducing the risk and harm to the public from climate change-related disasters. The aim of the Hub is to improve the overall effectiveness of disaster preparedness efforts and to promote transnational cooperation between scientists and practitioners in this key field. To achieve this, the COST Action will (1) develop an open access knowledge platform focusing on warning systems, relevant legal and policy frameworks, challenges to effective warning communication, (2) identify best practices and governance recommendations for effective warning communication, and (3) create new formats for knowledge exchange and networking among key stakeholders in Europe.

AlertHub was started and is chaired by Florian Meissner at Macromedia University of Applied Sciences (Cologne, Germany) and Corina Daba-Buzoianu at the National University of Political Studies and Public Administration (SNSPA in Bucharest, Romania), with SNSPA being the grant holding institution. The European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) is an intergovernmental funding organization for the creation of research networks, called COST Actions. These networks offer an open space for collaboration among scientists across Europe (and beyond) and thereby give impetus to research advancements and innovation.
