Academic Preparation Course

The target group of the course are Bachelor students of Media Technology and Computer Science as well as Master students of Media Business. The course will be offered from winter semester 2021/2022 as a substitute for Usability Engineering 1. The goal of the course is to convey the basics of user-centered development of interactive systems. In this context, basic principles of usability engineering and quality of experience will be taught. In addition to the weekly lectures there will be accompanying seminars in the form of Moodle quizzes and exercises.

Registration for the Moodle course is mandatory for all participating students.

The course is aimed at bachelor's students of Research in Media Engineering. The aim of the course is to apply and deepen the knowledge acquired in User-Centric Engineering 1 in the field of usability engineering in practical examples. In addition, the basics of project management are taught. At the beginning of the course, a selection of topics will take place, and the topics will then be worked on in groups during the semester.

The target group of the course is the fifth semester undergraduate students of Media Technology. The course is offered in cooperation with the Electronic Media Technology Group and the Audiovisual Technology Group. The goal of the course is to teach the basics of scientific writing and presentation in preparation for the bachelor thesis. Topics are chosen at the beginning of the semester from a list of specific media technology topics. Throughout the course, there will be regular consultations and presentations, as well as a basic course on scientific work in the University Library.

Even today, a large number of tasks cannot be fully automated. In addition to complex and creative activities, these tasks include subjective evaluations and, in some cases, relatively simple classification tasks. Crowdsourcing, or human-based computation, is often used to efficiently solve small tasks that cannot be solved automatically.
This course teaches the basics of crowdsourcing and human-based computation, in particular how to decompose existing tasks so that they can be efficiently distributed and processed by humans. The course covers topics such as typical quality assurance mechanisms, the use of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation, and the technical implementation of tasks.

Registration for the Moodle course is mandatory for all participating students.

This course has two main foci: design and evaluation of virtual and augmented reality systems and video quality evaluation. The students can choose a focus area and work on a related project.

After attending the lectures during the research seminar, students are able to understand concepts related to experimental design and research practices related to technology evaluation and human behavior.
