You will find a list and description of all our courses on the TU Ilmenau moodle website, divided into summer and winter term accordingly under „Zentralinstitut für Bildung“: Moodle - Zentralinstitut für Bildung

Language courses are generally divided into three levels:

• A (beginners)
• B (intermediate)
• C (advanced)

Several subcategories are added to these: A1.1, A1.2, A2.1 and so forth.

We offer general language courses (“Allgemeinsprachliche Sprachkurse“) on levels A1-C1 as well as specialized courses, for example in grammar, phonetics, conversation, academic or technical German. You are free to mix and match any of these courses.

Whenever you learn a new language, chose course A1.1 – no prerequisites are necessary for this level.

If you have already learned a language, try to remember the last course you took and choose the next one (example: you’ve successfully completed a B2.1 course. Now it’s time to enroll in B2.2).

In case you are unsure about your language level, complete the following placement test: Einstufungstest für Deutsch als Fremdspracheand e-mail the results to: Einstufung-DaF@tu-ilmenau.de.

There are several weeks before the start of the semester to enroll in the language courses. This time is called enrollment period (“Einschreibezeitraum”).

• before the Winter semester: end of September – beginning of October.   
• before the Summer semester: end of March – beginning of April.

During this period, you can enroll for a language course on Moodle. You must already be enrolled at the TU Ilmenau and have access to Moodle.

If you have missed the enrolment period or the semester has already started, please write an email to the lecturer of the course. The lecturer can then still enroll you into the course if there are any vacant places left.

It depends on the documented course description (cf. module boards).

If you participate in a language course with 2 lessons (90 minutes per week), you will usually receive 2-3 credit points.

If you participate in a language course with 4 lessons (2 x 90 minutes per week), you will usually receive 4-5 credit points at the end.

However, these credit points are only awarded if you have attended approx. 80% of the course sessions and have fulfilled the final assignment (see point 6).

Many general language courses have 2 lessons (90 minutes per week), some - e.g. beginners classes - offer 4 lessons (2x90 minutes per week). Specialized courses (i.e., grammar, phonetics, conversation, academic German, technical German) usually have 2 lessons (90 minutes per week).

In many courses, you take a written exam at the end of the course to receive credit points. However, other examinations are also possible, for example an oral presentation during the semester, a written term paper or various projects during the semester. At the beginning of the course, the lecturer announces what you have to achieve in the course if you want to receive credit points.

All language courses during your studies are free of charge for students of the TU Ilmenau.
