What makes our language courses special

If you wish to take a German language course in preparation for your degree programme, which culminates in the telc Deutsch C1 university-level examination, you will be placed in the intermediate-(M), advanced (O) or exam preparation course.

You can sign a study agreement at the same time as you receive your course agreement from us. This allows you to enrol as a student at the Technische Universität Ilmenau on the preparatory programme whilst you are undertaking your language preparation, and to pay the semester fee.

This grants you all the rights of a student and means you will receive the Thoska Card from the Technische Universität Ilmenau whilst on the preparatory course. You can therefore, for example, eat in the canteen at reduced prices, gain access to the Moodle platform or live in a student hall of residence.

Please refer to the course pages for the individual prices of the respective courses.*

Language Placement Test

The language preparation for the course begins with a language placement test.

This test is designed to assess your language skills (minimum level B1 CEFR), so that you can be placed in the most suitable language group (M course/O course/exam preparation course) for the subsequent language training.

Please note!

Furthermore, any applicant for a place on the German as a Foreign Language (DaF) courses who cannot provide a certificate at C1 level is required to take the language placement test.

The language placement test for the 2026/2027 winter semester will take place on

1 October 2026 at the Technical University of Ilmenau

and will be held in person only.

The language placement test covers the following areas:
