Free search engines and databases (Business and Media)
In this seminar, we will show you which free search engines you can use to research scientific information and which search options you can use (especially Google Scholar). We will also take a look at AI applications that can support the search (e.g. Perplexity AI). We will also introduce you to the most important specialist databases in economics and media studies (Business Source Premier, Communication and Mass Media Complete, Nexis) and give you an insight into what citation databases (Web of Science, Scopus) can do. The basics of good research will only be discussed in passing.

Research skills: Engineering and Computer Science
Knowing the current state of research is an essential part of a seminar paper or thesis. In this 60-minute course, you will be shown the most important steps in scientific research, learn about the most important databases for your field of research and can try out in practical exercises how you can make your research even more efficient.

Which AI tools can support scientific research?
In this course, you will learn about generative AI tools (ChatGPT, Semantic Scholar, Consensus, Scopus AI) that can be used for research preparation and as a supplement to traditional literature searches. How can I use these AI tools effectively? And what do I need to keep in mind when using them? The basics of good research are only dealt with in passing. These basics can be worked out in advance in our self-study course.

To disperse or to manage? How Citavi simplifies working with sources.
In this seminar you will receive an introduction to the basic functions of the reference management program Citavi. We will show you how to record, manage and organize sources and the citations found in them in order to integrate them into a Word publication. Finally, we will insert the recorded sources and references in a selected citation style into a Word document and automatically create a bibliography.

Introduction to EndNote: Collecting, managing and citing literature
We will show you how to collect, manage and organize sources and the citations found in them. By collecting the literature you find and automatically creating the bibliography for your thesis, for example, you save time and organizational effort. This course is offered in German only.

Self-study courses@UB: Research is easy – the basics of scientific work
Basics of good scientific practice for students. If required, we will issue a confirmation of participation.

LaTeX goes Moodle
Introduction to LaTeX with practical exercises. Participants learn the basic principles, should be able to create their own document from scratch, and can understand and use a template (e.g. from a specialist field) after completing the course. For groups of five people or more, an introductory course in LaTeX (approx. 60 minutes) can be arranged in addition or as preparation.

The Bachelor's or Master's thesis often presents you with major challenges - time, work organization, structure, formulation, citation... this 60-minute course helps to bring order to the mental chaos. You are welcome to bring along anything that is bothering you in this regard. But even if you don't bring any questions of your own, you will leave this course with a few useful tips for your own work.
