Since 2006 the Ilmenau University Library has been operating the Universitätsverlag Ilmenau (University Press Ilmenau) for scientists of the university.
The University Press publishes predominantly books, articles, documents etc. of the disciplines
This service is embedded in the overall concept and the objectives of ilmedia, allowing the University Library to combine and pool its activities for publications at TU Ilmenau for contributing to an optimal visibility, distribution and reception of scientific publications. Thus the text published as a book is not only offered at a reasonable price in the bookshops but is also available as an electronic document in the Digitale Bibliothek Thüringen (Digital Library Thuringia). Authors and readers benefit significantly from this way of hybrid publication: from the worldwide availability of the document on the Internet and the user-friendly version of a printed book.
The Universitätsverlag Ilmenau (University Press) is available for all scientists of TU Ilmenau if they are authors or publishers of a document or paper. PhD students can publish their dissertations in Universitätsverlag; the same applies to Diploma, Bachelor and Master’s theses which requires the approval of the supervising professor.
The author formats the manuscript according to the requirements specified by the University Press and submits it in electronic form. The University Press takes care of the design of the book cover in a uniform appearance based on the corporate design of the university and prepares the title pages and imprint.
urthermore, the University Press assigns an ISBN for the printed version and a Persistent Identifier (URN) for the electronic publication and sends deposit copies to Deutsche Nationalbibliothek and the Thüringer Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek in Jena.
The University Press also publishes electronically in the scope of Digitale Bibliothek Thüringen.
The decisive philosophy of Universitätsverlag is determined by the promotion and support of the visibility, recognition and reception of scientific publications from TU Ilmenau. An online publication which is free of charge and publicly accessible on the Internet can be found quickly and worldwide with the help of search engines and reference services.
Universitätsverlag advises the author at all stages of the publishing process. The author receives 12 copies of his/her publication after printing. On request he/she may receive more copies at special price for authors. The author entirely finances the publication of the document, book etc in Universitätsverlag Ilmenau and receives 75% of the profit as a fee starting with the 26th copy sold. The author can also apply for royalties uniquely at Verwertungsgesellschaft Wort (VGWort) which reduces publication costs.
The availability for delivery in the book trade is guaranteed for five years, and this availability is also stated in directory of deliverable books (VLB) and in the lists of further online booksellers. Additionally, cataloguing and indexing in library catalogues and the university bibliography of the TU Ilmenau are granted.
The publishing contract is the basis of the cooperation between author and Universitätsverlag Ilmenau, as it regulates costs, fees, the period of availability and deliverability for the book trade and the number of rights of use to be granted to the Universitätsverlag Ilmenau. The author grants the publishing house only non-exclusive rights for the electronic version of the publication, i.e. the author can offer the document on his/her own website or the website of a third party.
