The prototype of our 'Shaft Measuring System' at Fachgebiet Produkt- und Systementwicklung at Technische Universität Ilmenau is now in operation. The latest component contains the power supply for all the electrical devices inside. The housing was printed on our MakerBot Method X FDM printer.
The design is a good example of the realisation of several properties: Manufacturability, function, safety, ergonomics, strength, sustainability and the ability to be (dis)assembled. We decided to use ABS-R filament as a recycled filament and because of the design we need almost no support structures.
The measuring device is the basis for our interdisciplinary teaching formats in the context of Systems Engineering and Virtual Product Development as well as the basis for practical investigations addressing our research questions on MBSE, Knowledge Graphs, Robust Design and Digital Twins.
We are already working on further improvements and look forward to presenting them soon. The improvements include optimisation and extension of the Digital Twin, including an error model of the measurement system, and Data Management. Thanks also go to our engaged students who actively support us in the project.
