The prototype of our 'Shaft Measuring System' at Fachgebiet Produkt- und Systementwicklung at Technische Universität Ilmenau is now in operation. The latest component contains the power supply for all the electrical devices inside. The housing was printed on our MakerBot Method X FDM printer.

The design is a good example of the realisation of several properties: Manufacturability, function, safety, ergonomics, strength, sustainability and the ability to be (dis)assembled. We decided to use ABS-R filament as a recycled filament and because of the design we need almost no support structures.

The measuring device is the basis for our interdisciplinary teaching formats in the context of Systems Engineering and Virtual Product Development as well as the basis for practical investigations addressing our research questions on MBSE, Knowledge Graphs, Robust Design and Digital Twins.

We are already working on further improvements and look forward to presenting them soon. The improvements include optimisation and extension of the Digital Twin, including an error model of the measurement system, and Data Management. At the Technische Universität Ilmenau, we will introduce ChatGPT to students as part of the Systems Engineering (called Design Methodology in Ilmenau) course starting in the summer term. The aim is for students to understand theaddedvalue, but also the challenges, so that they can use AI solutions in product development in a targeted way.

The development of mechatronic or cybertronic products is a complex process. At Technische Universität Ilmenau, we understand the importance of providing our students with the necessary skills to effectively handle this complexity. Against this background, approaches such as Systems Engineering and Model-Based Systems Engineering are included in the curriculum at Technische Universität Ilmenau so that students can use them in a targeted manner.

However, even with the potential benefits of these approaches, engineers often face manychallenges. Identifying relevant stakeholder needs, requirements or understanding relevant knowledge such as physical effects and technological constraints can be difficult. In addition, the idea generation process, which is crucial to innovation, can be hindered bybiases ormentalbarriers.

In addressing these challenges, we see great potential in leveraging AI solutions, particularly through Large Language Models like ChatGPT. While these models weren't initially designed for such purposes, their underlying learning processes and fine-tuning enable them to provide feedback containingvaluableinsights.
