Artificial intelligence (AI) is on everyone's lips. Long gone are the days when it was only talked about in research labs and at specialist conferences. AI has long since arrived in the everyday products we use every day. What is new, however, is a louder public discourse on the opportunities and risks of increasingly universal AI and its social and moral implications. Are the natural-looking and often surprising conversations with large-scale language models like ChatGPT the first sparks of synthetic universal intelligence, or is this just a digital parrot holding up a mirror to us in the end?

This talk cannot answer these questions exhaustively, but will attempt an overview of current developments in the field of AI with a stronger focus on technical applications. Together, we look at the current use of AI and how these approaches differ from the currently hotly debated universal language models. We look at trends and discuss some of the unresolved issues that research and development must now address.
