Sanchez/Galvin/Bach: How design rules emerge and evolve

The journal, published by Oxford University Press Industrial and Corporate Change published a special issue on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the book "Design Rules: The Power of Modularity" by Carliss Baldwin and Kim Clark.

One of the contributions to the appreciation of the concept of Design Rules was written by Prof. Bach together with Ron Sanchez, Copenhagen Business School, and Peter Galvin, Edith Cowan University/Perth.

In their paper, the three authors examine which variables managers consider when making decisions about product architecture and organizational architecture and how design rules influence not only these internal company decisions but also the architecture of industries and networks.

The idea for this manuscript was born during a joint research stay of Ron Sanchez and Norbert Bach as guests of Peter Galvin in Perth in 2008.
