The Enlightenment school of thought and intellectual maturity in the face of traditional doctrines was accompanied by a loss - the loss of wholeness in thought and life. The subsequent cultural-historical epoch of Romanticism remedied this: it created a new heaven that did not require metaphysical validation.

In his lecture at the TU Ilmenau Citizens' Campus, Stefan Matuschek, Professor of Modern German Literature at Friedrich Schiller University Jena, will delve deep into the literature of the Romantic period. Its new style makes transcendence conscious as a product of the imagination without devaluing it. In other words: Romanticism is the enlightened insight into the vitality of the imagination. After the Enlightenment, it thus became the second decisive impulse of European modernism.
