With distinction of magna cum laude, Pauline Gidget Estella from the Media Studies Group has successfully defended her doctoral dissertation in front of an international audience, marking a significant milestone in her research career.

Pauline Estella has conducted innovative research on journalism competence with a global perspective titled "Decentering the Discourse on Journalistic Competence in the Digital Age". Through a comprehensive literature review and in-depth interviews with experts from 33 countries, professional associations, and comparative research projects, she developed a framework of journalism competence that challenges Western-centric and industry-centered discourses. Her study deconstructed integral concepts, identified typologies of competence based on environmental factors, and established predictors of competence. Her research sheds light on critical issues in journalism education, expands our understanding of journalism competence on a global scale, and provides valuable insights for the future of the field in a rapidly evolving media landscape.
