TU Ilmenau
Rabia Gül Yazar

Interview with an exchange student, Ms Rabia Gül Yazar, from the Turkish-German University (TGU) in Istanbul, who is studying at Technische Universität Ilmenau (TU Ilmenau) in the winter semester 2023/24 as part of the planned double-degree program for the Master’s programs in “International Communication and Media Research” (ICMR, TGU) and “Media and Communication Science” (MCS, TU Ilmenau).

  • Could you briefly introduce yourself and share your academic background? Which Master’s program are you currently enrolled in at TU Ilmenau, and what motivated your decision to study in Germany?

I am Rabia Gül Yazar. I come from Istanbul. I earned my Bachelor’s degree from the Department of Culture and Communication Sciences at the Turkish-German University. During my undergraduate studies, I also studied at the University of Bayreuth for one year. Currently, I am pursuing a Master’s degree in International Media and Communication Research, a joint program offered by the Turkish-German University and the Technische Universität Ilmenau. This winter term (2023/24), I am pleased to have the opportunity to study for one semester in the Master’s program in Media and Communication Sciences at the Technische Universität Ilmenau.

What drew me to study in Germany was the dual nature of its academic tradition – well-established yet simultaneously open to innovation. I also think that the strong encouragement of critical thinking here is very stimulating and liberating for the mind.

  • How has your experience at TU Ilmenau been so far, and what aspects of the university andthe German education system have stood out for you?

Up to now, my experience has been very positive. What stands out to me the most is the participatory nature of the education system. The emphasis here is on “learning by doing”, not just traditional studying or being taught. The university’s technical orientation contributes significantly to this learning approach. In my view, it is particularly satisfying that communication is considered a comprehensive system, where both content and the intricacies of processes and structure are integral components of the learning system.

  • What are your expectations for your Master's studies at TU Ilmenau? What goals and experiences do you hope to achieve during your time here?

Undoubtedly, my foremost expectation is the substantial impact that the time I am spending and will continue to spend here will have have on my education. I anticipate that the emphasis on technical knowledge and practical application will provide a unique perspective, enhancing my understanding in ways distinct from my previous experiences. Additionally, the prospect of engaging with different individuals in an international environment, forging new connections, and gaining novel experiences within this context excites me immensely. I envision that my productivity will ascend as a result of these diverse experiences.

  • Are there any specific skills or qualifications you bring to the TU Ilmenau that may be of interest to your fellow students or the university?

Frankly speaking, I have observed a remarkable diversity in experiences and skill sets among all the students in the MCS study program. Being surrounded by such competent colleagues in this enriching environment has been an overwhelmingly positive experience.

Personally, drawing from my background, I would highlight my strength in theoretical understanding. Having undergone a highly theory-oriented education, my awareness of theoretical concepts and historical processes in the realm of social sciences has proven beneficial to me thus far.

  • How does the Master’s program in MCS align with your career aspirations, and how do you anticipate that your experience here will contribute to your future career prospects?

I think this has been the most challenging question so far, given the constant evolution of the media landscape, a fact that I believe resonates with many. Crafting a fixed idea or plan for the future in such a dynamic field is not very easy. However, being an individual with a profound passion for research and learning, I am confident that the nature and quality of education here will significantly shape my future academic journey. My enthusiasm for continued academic pursuits is notably reinforced in this environment. However, should I venture into a different field, the “learning by doing” approach I highlighted earlier would undoubtedly set me apart as a communication professional.

  • What advice would you give to German students in the MCS Master’s program who are considering studying at the TGU, and to Turkish students in the ICMR Master’s program planning to study at TU Ilmenau?

I highly recommend that both German and international students planning to attend TGU take the opportunity to explore and get to know Istanbul. As an incredibly cosmopolitan city, it provides communication scholars enthusiasts with unlimited opportunities for observation and experience.

For TGU students coming to Ilmenau, my advice is to embrace and make the most of the international diversity present here. I am confident they will acquire valuable insights, not only from their courses but also from the people they engage with. And, a friendly reminder to those who will come to Ilmenau – be prepared for the cold weather.

  • Is there anything you would like to share or add, any experiences, challenges, or insights that you consider important?

If you decide to pursue studies in another country, I would like to add that the initial phase might be challenging. However, with time, you will get used to it, and you will have a rewarding experience. Overcoming the initial challenges was my primary hurdle.
