Gold medal for invention of the BMTI

At the international trade fair “Ideen - Erfindungen – Neuheiten” iENA 2019 in Nürnberg from November 4 to November 7, the invention “Vorrichtung und Verfahren zur Elimination des Einflusses vorgelagerter Schichten bei spektralen Messungen an geschichteten Objekten” (“Arrangement and method for eliminating the influence of upstream layers in spectral measurements on layered objects”) by the international jury with awarded a gold medal.

Autofluorescence of biological tissue, e.g. the retina, can be used to detect metabolic changes as a sign for the early detection of diseases. The autofluorescence signals of the cornea and lens of the eye falsify the measurement results of the retina, especially with increasing patient age, and cannot be sufficiently suppressed with existing technology. The novel method solves this problem by realizing an additional non-confocal detection of the interfering signals, on the basis of which the artifacts can be removed from the autofluorescence signal of the retina.
