Transcript-VerlagDr. Pauline Gidget Estella, Prof. Martin Löffelholz, Dr. Aynur Sarısakaloğlu, and former staff members of the Department of Media Studies, Dr. Yi Xu and Kathrin Schleicher, explore in the volume “Cosmopolitan Communication Studies” the possibilities for a more cosmopolitan orientation in communication research.
In their article “Reimagining Risk and Crisis Communication Research Through a Cosmopolitan Lens,” Pauline Gidget Estella, Martin Löffelholz, and Yi Xu address key challenges facing risk and crisis communication in an increasingly complex and globalized world. Despite a growing number of studies emerging from the so-called Global South, risk and crisis communication research remains overly focused on Euro-American perspectives. The authors therefore call for a fundamental rethinking and propose core principles for a more cosmopolitan approach to research.
Aynur Sarısakaloğlu highlights in her article “Cosmopolitanization of Journalism Research in the Era of Artificial Intelligence: Bridging the Global Divide in Algorithm-Driven Journalism” that while algorithmic systems open up new opportunities for journalists, they also exacerbate existing digital inequalities and contribute to a global “AI-driven divide.” Sarısakaloğlu proposes a conceptual framework for an inclusive research practice that promotes a deeper understanding of AI-supported journalism in a global context, reflects on existing power asymmetries, and addresses blind spots in current scholarship.
Kathrin Schleicher and Aynur Sarısakaloğlu investigate in their article "Cosmopolitanization of War Coverage Research: Empowering Non-Western Narratives,” the factors influencing the (in)visibility of wars and conflicts in journalistic reporting. They draw attention to the often Western-centric patterns of interpretation and advocate for a cosmopolitan perspective that foregrounds non-Western narratives, enhancing their visibility and representation both in journalistic practice and in journalism research.
