New publication in Annals of the International Communication Association

Felipe Barreto de Souza Martins, Jingyuan Yu, and Emese Domahidi, members of the Computational Communication research group at TU Ilmenau, have unveiled important findings on the COVID-19 pandemic research landscape. Their paper, published in the "Annals of the International Communication Association," highlights the differences in scientific output between high-income and low- to middle-income countries.
The paper, titled "A Global Health Crisis with Divided Research Traditions? A Comparative Review of Brazilian and International Research in Communication on the COVID-19 Pandemic," provides a systematic review of publications regarding the COVID-19 pandemic in Communication science in Brazil and international high-impact journals, illustrating the challenges faced by researchers from developing nations in gaining international academic visibility.
In comparing the work of Brazilian researchers with those published in high quality international journals, the study reveals how distinct research traditions and differing resource availabilities can explain the difference in focus and methodologies of these researchers. The struggle faced by researchers in low and middle-income countries in gaining attention for their work presents a significant issue - it could limit our overall understanding of the pandemic's global effects if these diverse viewpoints aren't adequately included.
