New publication in the International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction

Researchers from the CCS group Dr. Jingyuan Yu and Prof. Dr. Emese Domahidi have published new article “Quantity or Quality? Comparing Social Media Data Sampling Strategies for Government Crisis Communication Research” on International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction. This study aims to develop a viable and generalizable theory-based sampling design for future studies of government crisis communication on social media, addressing the lack of clear guidelines in this research field. To achieve this methodological goal, this research focuses on creating different datasets based on various (i.e., deductive vs inductive) sampling strategies and comparing them using different metrics (i.e., Jaccard index, precision, and recall) and different analysis (i.e., relevant users and content, top users and terms, and tweeting frequency over time). The results revealed that the deductive sampling strategy outperformed the inductive strategy in all the studies cases, and deductive sampling is desired for future study of government crisis communication. Implications for comparative and computational research are as well discussed.

This study is a collaboration work with Ms. Khaoula Benmaarouf (former researcher at TU Ilmenau, now University of Applied Sciences Ruhr West) and Prof. Dr. Nadine Steinmetz (former researcher at TU Ilmenau, now University of Applied Sciences Erfurt). This research is part of the DECIPHER project, and is funded by the German Research Foundation (project number: 458225198).
