At this year's Biosignals Workshop in Göttingen, M. Sc. Laureen Wegert, a PhD student at the BMTI, won second place in the student competition in the "best oral presentation" category with her paper on the "Biophysiological Model of the Phrenic Nerve". The paper deals with the modelling of non-invasive stimulation of the phrenic nerve. The stimulation can be used to activate the diaphragm to generate artificial respiration. Models and simulations help to select suitable stimulation parameters and to optimize the stimulation to the patient. The topic was developed in the Department of Biomedical Engineering as part of the project "eVent – Artificial ventilation by stimulation of the phrenic nerve".
