The roll-out of the 5G mobile network, which is currently in full swing, is viewed by some with concern: Is making calls with a cell phone harmful to health? Do mobile phone base stations emit dangerous immissions? Such fears often stem from a lack of or incorrect information, says Dr. Christian Bornkessel, senior scientist at the RF and Microwave Research Group at the TU Ilmenau. In his lecture at the TU Ilmenau Citizens' Campus, the scientist, who is a member of the "Non-ionizing Radiation" committee of the German Radiation Protection Commission, considers various questions: Where in the mobile phone network does electromagnetic radiation occur? How large is it? How are limit values for mobile phone radiation formed? And what is the state of research on biological effects of radiation emitted by mobile communications on humans? With his explanations, Dr. Bornkessel aims to dispel fears and anxieties surrounding mobile phone radiation.
