Pauline Estella and Johanna Radechovsky at the division conference

Media Studies group presented at the annual conference of the "International and Intercultural Communication" section of the German Society for Journalism and Communication Studies (DGPuK) and the "Cosmopolitan Communication Studies" network funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) on November 17, 2023 at Freie Universität Berlin.

Pauline Gidget Estella and Johanna Radechovsky presented key findings from a multi-method study on the internationalization of the Institute for Media and Communication Studies (IfMK) at the TU Ilmenau. Through interviews and a survey, the authors analyzed the extent to which the IfMK can be described as cosmopolitanized. The authors proposed a conceptual framework that looks at academic cosmopolitanism as "embedded" in different levels, from the individual to the structural level. The results suggest that while there are strides towards cosmopolitanism, some hindrances exist, especially at the levels beyond the individual and institute. Building on this, the authors presented strategic recommendations for the further cosmopolitan development of the institute.

The annual conference was held in Berlin under the motto "Out of the comfort zone: Challenges of communication studies in the age of new global realities" and was jointly organized by the DGPuK's International and Intercultural Communication division and the DFG network Cosmopolitan Communication Studies. In three panels, the attendees exchanged views on the theoretical and methodological challenges of globally oriented communication studies.
