Making programming worlds a playful experience for pupils

On December 2, 2019, the work of the first Open Roberta Coding Hub in Central Germany has officially started and already now the first Events online. Sign up!

The initiators of the new Open-Roberta Coding Hub are the Student Research Center of the Technical University Ilmenau, the IMMS Institute for Microelectronic and Mechatronic Systems gemeinnützige GmbH and the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT. Through our Ilmenau Open Roberta Coding Hub, we want to get schoolchildren more interested in scientific and technical professions and courses of study in the medium term.

Through the activities of so-called Open Roberta Coding Hubs, which exist throughout Germany, children, young people and also teachers playfully understand how robots are programmed and thus gain access to the basics of the digital world.

What is Open Roberta?

The initiative "Roberta® - Learning with robots" takes the next generation into the digital world. Since 2002, the education program of the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems IAIS has been training teachers throughout Germany and beyond its borders. With its successful educational concept, the initiative has already trained more than 2,100 teachers and reached more than 450,000 students. In addition to innovative modular robot systems, experiments and target group-specific teaching materials, the initiative offers support and further training to establish technology education and interest in MINT subjects in schools on a long-term basis.

The programming platform " developed from the Roberta InitiativeOpen Roberta Lab" has been around since 2014 and aims to provide children with intuitive access to programming. The Open Roberta Lab is freely available on the Internet and can be accessed using any standard browser. With the help of the graphical programming language "NEPO", the first programming successes can be celebrated effortlessly after a short time using the "drag & drop" principle. The Ilmenau Open Roberta Coding Hub is mobile and can be booked  together with a programming trainer. The mobile lab is equipped with laptops, LEGO Mindstorms boxes, microcontrollers and, in the future, even more robotic systems.
