Description
With the diploma course of studies in electrical engineering and information technology, the TU Ilmenau offers a continuous course of studies from WS 17/18 onwards, leading to the degree of Diplom-Ingenieur*in. The demanding course of study begins in the 1st-3rd semester with an interdisciplinary, integrative and practice-oriented basic training. Building on this, students in the 4th and 5th semesters acquire solid, extended knowledge in all core areas of electrical engineering and information technology. During the 5th semester, a mentor is individually selected in preparation for the subsequent specialisation.
Starting in the 6th semester, the students will focus on a subject and increasingly research-oriented main subject of their choice with a corresponding later specialisation. The main subjects offered are:
- Information and Communication Technology
- Microelectronics and Nanotechnology
- Energy and Automation Technology
- Media Technology
In addition, there is the possibility of a free study of the EIT diploma course (free main subject) from the 6th semester onwards. The minor subject (not the same as the major subject, also possible outside the subject area) complements the main subject according to the students' profile objectives. The specialisation of the major subject in the 9th semester is strongly research-oriented and serves as preparation for the diploma thesis in the 10th semester.
Special features of the diploma programme
Mentoring principle
Every student has a mentor from the faculty's professors who will advise him/her. The link to a subject area of the Faculty of EI, which is established through the election, promotes not only the professional profile of the students but also social skills such as teamwork and communication skills.
Mobility Window
Minor subject, the specialized internship with seminar paper as well as the specialization can also be done at foreign institutions at the request of the students and in agreement with the mentor.
Option free main compartment
Consistent studies
Joint foundations in engineering science (basic studies, 56 credits) (e.g. physics, mathematics, electrical engineering, technical mechanics, presentation theory, technical computer science, algorithms and programming)
(Advanced) fundamentals of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (basic and main studies, 85 credits) (electronics, electronic measurement, theoretical electrical engineering, control and system technology, micro- and nanoelectronics, electrical power engineering)
Softskills and economics (basic studies, 4 credits) (english, economic foundations)
Main subject and specialisation (main studies, 60 credits) (main subjects at choice see below)
Minor subject (main studies, 30 credits) (selectable from the range of subjects offered by TU Ilmenau or outside)
Advanced internship and diploma thesis (main studies, 59 credits)
The basic internship is a course of study with a total duration of six weeks. If possible, it should be completed before the course of study, but at the latest by the end of the 4th semester. The specialist internship in the 8th semester lasts 20 weeks and can be completed in companies as well as in non-university research institutions in Germany and abroad. It is accompanied by a seminar paper.
