Optische Telekommunikationstechnik 2

Motivation

The lecture "Optische Telekommunikationstechnik 2" focuses on the telecommunications aspects of optical transmission. Students are enabled to model, analyse and design modern optical transmission systems or parts of such systems. In the first part of the lecture, wireless optical systems are considered. Here the listeners learn about modern transmission methods such as "Discrete Multitone Transmission" (DMT), which are suitable for intensity modulation and direct reception. The focus of the second part of the lecture is the analysis of transmission methods for single-mode optical fibres in WDM operation (WDM: Wavelength-Division Multiplex). On the one hand, the students learn about possibilities for generating and receiving the corresponding signals. On the other hand, the listeners are enabled to consider and analyse selected procedures in connection with the main problems of transmission (such as optical amplifier noise, dispersion or WDM crosstalk). The physical description of the components (taught in "Optische Telekommunikationstechnik 1") is thereby increasingly abstracted so that the students arrive at a system-theoretical modelling.
