Signal processing for intelligent sensor systems group

The Signal Processing for Intelligent Sensor Systems (SIS) department is based at the Institute of Information Technology of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology and was founded on May 1, 2025. It cooperates closely with the Fraunhofer Institute for Nondestructive Testing IZFP. Employees from Fraunhofer and the university conduct joint research in the SigMaSense research group. The SIS department also cooperates closely with the Department of Electronic Measurement Technology and Signal Processing.

The SIS department researches architectures for the efficient acquisition and processing of sensor signals. The focus is on the acquisition of relevant signal components and sensor-related evaluation in order to make sensor systems more efficient, more robust and more universal. In addition to a focus on ultrasonic signals, radar, X-ray or thermography can also be used, for example. Our main applications are in the field of non-destructive testing methods and the monitoring of industrial processes.

Research

The SIS department researches architectures for the efficient acquisition and processing of sensor signals. The focus is on the acquisition of relevant signal components and sensor-related evaluation in order to make sensor systems more efficient, more robust and more universal. We dedicate ourselves to a variety of modalities, including

  • Ultrasound (structure-borne sound, airborne ultrasound)

  • Radar (from ground radar to terahertz)

  • X-ray (especially industrial X-ray CT)

  • thermography

Our main applications are in the field of non-destructive testing (NDT) and the monitoring of industrial processes. Specific activities include, for example

  • Optimized excitation, acquisition and reconstruction for multi-channel ultrasound imaging

  • AI-based image reconstruction, classification and evaluation of NDT data

  • Large Language Models (LLM): knowledge management and interfaces for qualified assistance systems

  • Assisted manual inspection to increase the reliability and intuitive operability of technical systems

  • Remote inspection solutions for NDT in times of skills shortages

  • Acoustic monitoring of manufacturing processes, in particular high-speed laser welding and ultrasonic welding
