Amateur radio is a versatile technical hobby and a globally recognized radio service that is used for international communication, technical and scientific training and support in emergencies and disasters. Radio amateurs can communicate with each other almost worldwide, independently of the Internet - across national and continental borders. Radio communications are possible in around 335 amateur radio countries, with only a few countries such as North Korea not allowing amateur radio.

Communication takes place via voice radio, Morse telegraphy or digital operating modes. The prerequisite for participation is a state license with an examination, which is mandatory in all countries. The content of radio communications is restricted to technical, operational and personal topics; commercial or political content is not permitted. Radio contacts are confirmed by so-called QSL cards, which can result in international diplomas and awards, for example for radio contacts with all continents. In addition, radio competitions are held almost every weekend in which interested parties can take part.

Today, modern radio equipment is mostly commercially manufactured, while antennas are often built in-house. Amateur radio is suitable for all ages and no special technical or language skills are required. Preparation for the exam takes place through courses or self-study. A radio station can be operated almost anywhere, even in your own home, as long as the legal regulations are observed. There are around 60,000 licensed radio amateurs in Germany and around 3 million worldwide, with the largest communities in Japan and the USA.
