Would you like to experience a German university up close? Then come to us at the TU Ilmenau and study for one or two semesters. This is also possible without a cooperation agreement between our universities.
- Nomination by the International Office of your home university by e-mail to TU Ilmenau International Office
- German or English language skills at least on level B1 (CEFR)
- Your home university nominates you by e-mail to us
- We send you a link to register in our database
- You register in our database and enter the required data
- You upload the required documents to the database
- We check your documents
- If everything is OK, we make your invitation to the exchange study at the TU Ilmenau available for download in the database
Please register in our application portal and upload the following documents:
- Proof of achievements in your studies so far (Transcript of Records)
- Certificate of enrollment from your home university
- Language certificate German or English at least on level B1 (language depends on the selected study program)
You must submit your documents in German or English. Please have documents in other languages translated before you apply!
Application period for the winter semester: 02 December to 31 May

The language of instruction in our Bachelor programs is German. The majority of the Master programs is also taught in German. Some master courses are bilingual or completely in English.

Overall, our Modultafeln (university catalog) provide a good overview of the individual degree programs and the courses offered.
Students who hold EU citizenship do not need a visa for their stay in Ilmenau. You can easily enter Germany with your passport or national ID card.
Are you a third-country national? You can find out whether you need a visa to study in Ilmenau or not on the website of the German Foreign Office.
Health insurance is compulsory in Germany. If you have a European Health Insurance Card, you do not need to take out a new insurance policy in Germany.
Please contact the International Office before you leave to find out about the possibilities that suit you best!
If you do not have sufficient health insurance upon arrival, you can still conclude one in Ilmenau. The costs are about € 105 per month. You will find contact persons in our Academic Service Center on the campus.
The officially recommended cost of living in Ilmenau (which must be proven when a visa is required) is € 861 per month. Ilmenau is a relatively cheap place to live compared to other study locations in Germany.
The Studierendenwerk Thüringen offers students fully furnished single and double rooms as well as single apartments on the campus of the TU Ilmenau. The rent varies depending on size and equipment currently between € 160.00 and € 295.00 per month. When taking over the room each tenant has to pay a deposit of € 300.00. This deposit will be refunded at the end of the rental period after proper return of the apartment. The TU Ilmenau is a campus university. This means that numerous dormitories, almost all faculty buildings, teaching rooms, the library, administration buildings and the refectory are located on the Hans-Stamm-Campus.
The laboratories, teaching rooms and workshops of the TU Ilmenau meet the latest scientific standards. The computer centre offers a freely accessible Wi-Fi network on campus for all students. Students also receive a personalized e-mail address which is used for communication within the university.
The university library offers a large selection of scientific literature and has several online databases for research and ordering.
The campus and the city of Ilmenau offer you a wide variety of leisure activities: a lively club life, sports courses, mountain bike trails, bicycle paths, swimming pool (indoor and outdoor), toboggan run, bowling, ice rink, nature and much more...
Ilmenau is what you make of it!
Trains run hourly from Erfurt (the capital of the federal state of Thuringia) and Ilmenau. You can find information about travel times on the websites of the Deutsche Bahn. Ilmenau has three stops: Ilmenau Roda, Ilmenau Pörlitzer Höhe and Ilmenau train station. If you want to go to the university, you should use the latter stop as an exit.
Ilmenau can also be easily reached by car via the A71 motorway. Please use exit 15 "Ilmenau-Ost" to get to the campus as quickly as possible.
Even during the semester you are not alone! Tutors are available to answer your questions. Thanks to a large international community, you will quickly find a place on our campus and maybe make friends for life.
You need the following documents to register at the TU Ilmenau:
- National ID card (EU/EEA) or passport or passport and visa (students from third countries)
- Invitation to exchange studies at the TU Ilmenau
- 1 passport photo according to biometric specifications for the student ID
- Proof of health insurance (European Health Insurance Card or membership certificate)
For other registrations (e.g. Foreigners' Office, Ilmenau town administration), you should also have your proof of financing with you.
After your arrival we will conclude a Learning Agreement. This agreement includes all courses you will attend during the semester. It is important that you not only inform the examination office at TU Ilmenau about your course selection, but also the responsible persons of your home university.
Before you leave, you should print out your performance overview at the Thoska terminal. You will need this document for the recognition of your studies at your home university.
TU Ilmenau offers German language courses for all Erasmus+ students during the semester. Information on the courses offered and on registration can be obtained from the Central Institute for Continuing Education on its website.
