If you are enrolled at TU Ilmenau, still have to take exams and there are free places for your study program at the corresponding partner university, you can apply for the Erasmus+ worldwide program to the responsible university teacher (website under construction).
In addition to Germans and nationals of a country participating in the program, third-country nationals who complete a (full) course of study in Germany leading to a recognized degree can also participate in the Erasmus program. Exchange students are not eligible for an Erasmus grant. Funding for a stay in the home country is not possible.
In the Erasmus+ worldwide - program two types of student mobility (SM) are supported:
Student Mobility for Study (SMS) and Student Mobility for Placements (SMP).
In principle, the sending and the receiving university must be in possession of a valid Erasmus University Charter (ECHE) relevant to the measure. This is the case at the TU Ilmenau.
For a study abroad grant (SMS), the home and host university must also have concluded an Erasmus+ Inter-Institutional Agreement. In addition to the number of places and the possible length of stay, the subject of study in which the exchange can take place is also agreed in the cooperation agreement. By signing the agreement, both institutions undertake not to charge tuition fees to their Erasmus guest students and to recognize the academic achievements accordingly.
As an enrolled student of the TU Ilmenau, you can apply for an Erasmus+ worldwide stay from the second year of your Bachelor's degree or from the first year of your Master's degree. Participation/support is possible up to and including the doctorate and depends on the number of places in the respective study phase.
Each host university requires at least a B1/B2 level of the language of instruction there. As a rule, this is English.
To prove your current language skills to the host university, you can submit a valid language certificate or use the DAAD form. The Language Department will be happy to assist you in confirming your language level. Please make sure that the certificate is not older than two years!
In addition to the language of instruction, you should have a basic knowledge (at least A1 level) of the corresponding national language. This will make communication and life on site easier for you.
With Erasmus+ worldwide, you can spend time in partner countries during each phase of your studies, depending on availability:
- up to twelve months each in Bachelor, Master, Doctoral studies
- Study visits at a partner institution of at least 3 - 12 months (also multiple)
- Internships at a partner institution of 2 - 12 months each (also multiple)
Please note the semester dates of the partner institutions. The start of the semester differs from our semester times sometimes strongly!

unsplash_evgeniyIvanovCurrently, the following funding rates for study stays (SMS) / internship stays (SMP) apply to all partner countries:
monthly residence rate: 700 Euro
Travel allowance: depending on the distance to the partner university (see next tab)
TU Ilmenau initially funds 80% of the total stay in the host country. The final grant will be calculated on the basis of your confirmed or recognized duration of stay after submission of all necessary documents.
A postponement of your stay (late arrival or early departure) will result in a reduction of the funds.
A legal claim to funding through the Erasmus program (exchange place and financial support) does not exist and can therefore not be asserted against the university.
In its Erasmus+ program, the EU provides a travel allowance for each participant. This will be calculated as follows (see Distance calculator of EU):
simple distance | Amount (= return travel) | Green Travel
500 - 1999 km | 309 € | 417 €
2000 - 2999 km | 395 € | 535 €
3000 - 3999 km | 580 € | 785 €
4000 - 7999 km | 1.188 € | 1.188 €
8000 km and more | 1.735 € | 1.735 €
The Erasmus Mobility Grant is a subsidy for the additional costs incurred abroad and is not a full scholarship. The grant usually does not cover all costs on site. Those who undertake such a project urgently need to bring other resources (private or subsidies) to bear. In some countries, the cost of living in university towns is at least as high as in Germany, if not much higher.
The same applies to the travel allowance (see previous tab), which is only a subsidy for the travel costs incurred, but does not have to cover them completely.
As an Erasmus student you are exempt from paying tuition fees at the host university. During your stay abroad you are still enrolled at TU Ilmenau and therefore obliged to pay our semester fee.
Comparable contributions for service offers of the partner universities, insurance premiums, student social contributions as well as costs for the use of materials do not count as tuition fees.
If one of the above applies to you, please contact your International Office and secure additional monthly funding during your Erasmus study stay.
The funding rates shown here apply to long-term mobilities with a duration of 2 to 12 months.
Target group | Funding criteria | Proofs | Funding |

Not only the NA DAAD, but also the TU Ilmenau is committed to supporting students with Erasmus+ funds and enabling them to travel abroad if they have physical, health or other restrictions.
If you decide to go on an Erasmus stay, we can submit an application to the NA DAAD to cover the additional costs incurred abroad. The approval amount is then based on the calculation of the additional costs incurred abroad and is only granted if other national bodies (integration offices, health insurance funds, regional associations, social welfare offices, student services) do not provide funding. An application should be submitted to the NA DAAD at least two months before the start of the stay.

If you receive BaföG in Germany, you can apply for BaföG abroad at the relevant BaföG office. Be aware that every grant of more than 300€ will be offset against the Auslands-BAföG.
You can also apply to the International Office for a grant within the framework of a university partnership. (see Intranet)
1 year before the stay: Go in contact with the respective cooperation officer of the TU Ilmenau and get detailed information about the desired exchange place, selection conditions, application deadlines and necessary requirements or ask at the International Office of your university.

Then apply for an exchange place with your contact person by the following deadlines
January 15 for a stay in the following winter semester
June 15 for a stay in the following summer semester
A commission consisting of cooperation officers from both partner institutions will decide on the allocation of places.
The following application documents have to be submitted to the contact person by the respective deadline:
The selection of potential scholarship holders is based on the following criteria:
If there are too many applicants for a few places, priority will be given to the top places via a ranking list. Those who have to be rejected can either try again in the following semester or choose one of our other exchange opportunities.
After selection, the International Office will receive a notification from the cooperation officer about the ranking list. A selection means at the same time that you will receive a confirmation of a place as well as the request to apply for the Erasmus+ worldwide scholarship in our database. For this purpose, the co-opreration officer of the TU Ilmenau will send an appropriate nomination information to the International Office, in which your e-mail address will be communicated.
At the same time, the International Office will send your nomination to the partner institution with the request to provide you with all registration/application information for the host institution.
For all organizational questions please contact Franziska Albrecht in general and for questions regarding the Erasmus+ worldwide scholarship contact Corinna Wedekind from the International Office as well as for technical questions the respective coordinator! They will support you and give you valuable advice on how to proceed.
As a rule, a confirmation of a place by the contact person is linked to the granting of an Erasmus+ worldwide mobility grant. However, there is no legal entitlement to this.
Please register in our Erasmus database and upload your documents. You will receive the link after the nomination e-mail of the projects responsible from the International Office.
The database checks in the background if you are enrolled. Please answer all categories truthfully, the funding documents will be generated accordingly from your information.
The International Office will inform the partner institutions about the nominated students. After that you will receive an email with further instructions from the host university.
There are application/registration procedures for proper registration at the host university. You will receive the relevant key data from the respective host institution. Follow the registration guidelines stated therein.
If you have any questions, please contact erasmusworldwide@tu-ilmenau.de.
During your Erasmus+ worldwide stay (SMS) you will take courses amounting to 30 ECTS credits per semester. You will list these in your Learning Agreement, which will be made available to you via our database.
You will clarify in advance with the responsible lecturers at the TU Ilmenau and your examination office which of the selected courses will be recognized as equivalent achievements or which achievements can be brought in accordingly.
Please note that you usually cannot select courses from the entire range of courses offered by the host institution, as the Erasmus+ worldwide Inter-Institutional Agreements are concluded on a subject-related basis.
A grant agreement will be concluded with the International Office of your university. The payment of the grant follows certain criteria, which will be discussed in detail at the International Office for signature. Scholarship holders are required to repay the funds, do not follow the agreements. There is no legal claim to the scholarship.
The conclusion of an Erasmus+ Grant Agreement or the award of an Erasmus+ Mobility Grant does not imply any insurance coverage.
As an Erasmus+ student, you are responsible for ensuring that you have sufficient insurance coverage in the host country.
Note: Please check your health insurance coverage for your stay in the host country and take out additional insurance if necessary!
In addition to health insurance, it is also strongly recommended that you take out liability and accident insurance for the host country! Furthermore, the insurer should be asked about benefits in case of a pandemic.
For the precaution of your health and reduction of the costs during the stay we recommend:
How high your costs are abroad depends on various factors. Decisive are the duration of your stay abroad, the conditions in your destination country and your own requirements or standard of living.
Possible costs incurred:
Please note that in case of illness or accident, you will usually have to pay the costs in advance, which you can then recover through your insurer.
Contact former outgoers or look for travel reports; they usually tell and recommend the cheapest opportunities and tastiest alternatives.
After your arrival at the host university you realize that selected courses do not take place, collide with a schedule or do not meet your expectations? No problem, because you can make changes in the "during mobility" part of your Learning Agreement.
You can usually find this part in your scholarship applicant account.
Please write an email to your Erasmus coordinator to discuss the procedure.
An amendment to the Grant Agreement will be made if your period of stay changes significantly (more than 5 days). You are obliged to immediately inform your contact person by e-mail about any changes in the duration of your stay.
Extension of stays with a further funding in the Erasmus+ worldwide program are only possible with the agreement of the cooperation officer!
Do you have massive problems with the implementation of the program? Are some things still unclear to you or do you need help with your tasks?
Then you can confidently turn to your coordinator or contact the contact points recommended contact points recommended by us.
Your Erasmus stay is coming to an end? Then it is time to take care of some formal things, because after your return you have to submit some documents to the International Office.
Please upload the documents CONFIRMATION OF REGISTRATION “departure” and TRANSCRIPT OF RECORDS to the database after your arrival in Germany.
If all documents are submitted and all requirements are met, the second Erasmus installment will be paid.
All examinations that you have taken abroad can be recognized. Your examination office and your professor will decide whether the credits will be recognized as equivalent or additional credits.
Additional achievements are also listed in the certificate of achievement or in the diploma supplement. They have no effect on the credit points to be earned in the course of study or on the grade point average.
At the end of your stay abroad, you must submit an informal application to the faculty's examination board for recognition of the academic achievements gained abroad and enclose your current learning agreement and the transcript of records.
A recommendation for grade conversion can be found here.
After completing the recognition process, please upload a current certificate of all academic achievements to date, which also includes the academic achievements completed abroad into the database.
