28 November | TU Ilmenau: Panel discussion "Robots as care assistants?"

Senioren mit dem RoboterTU Ilmenau/Michael Reichel
"Ringo", a robot developed at the TU Ilmenau to support stroke patients during rehabilitation

On November 28, 6:30 pm, the panel discussion "Robots as helpers in care?" will take place in the University Library Ilmenau. In view of the shortage of skilled workers in the care and healthcare sectors scientists around the world are researching robots to support nursing staff. The discussion will answer the question of what such care robots can already do today, but also whether it is ethically justifiable to leave the care of people to robots. The panel discussion is organized in cooperation with TU Ilmenau, the Catholic Forum in Thuringia and the Catholic Student Community "Thomas Morus". Admission is free.

The shortage of skilled workers in the care and healthcare sector is unbroken. There is widespread discussion about the excessive demands being placed on nursing staff and caring relatives, but there is also anxiety about whether it will still be possible to provide adequate care for elderly people and those in need of care in the future. Scientists around the world are therefore conducting research into robots that support people in the care and healthcare sector. Such assistance robots could take over routine tasks and heavy physical work, thus relieving the burden on care staff and supporting elderly people and people in need of care.

Prof. Horst-Michael Groß, Head of Neuroinformatics and Cognitive Robotics Lab at TU Ilmenau, is also developing robots that support older people and those that accompany stroke patients during rehabilitation. As a participant in the panel discussion, he will explain what assistance robots can already do today, but also what is needed for such a technical device to really be accepted as a helper. Also on the panel: Prof. Andreas Lob-Hüdepohl, who, as a member of the German Ethics Council, will take a stand on the question of whether it is ethically justifiable to leave the care of people to robots. The panel discussion will be moderated by Julia Grimm from Landeswelle Thüringen.
